The Environment You Train In Matters
Choosing the right gym environment can significantly impact your fitness journey. From small, private spaces to large commercial gyms, and everything in between, there are so many options. Each has its own advantages, so it’s essential to find the one that suits your needs. Here are some key factors to consider when selecting your training environment.
Do You Have the Right Tools?
The availability of appropriate equipment is crucial. Before choosing a gym, think about the tools you’ll need for effective training. Weightlifting gyms, for example, have ample space for barbells and platforms, whereas bodybuilding gyms are packed with free weights and machines.
In a rehab and performance setting like ours, we often use tools like testing equipment, knee extension machines, safety bars, sleds, and hurdles to achieve our goals. Ensuring access to these tools is so important for what we do.
Is It Appropriate to Your Needs?
Ensure the gym allows you to perform the exercises you need. If your training and rehab require running and jumping, the gym should have enough space for these activities. Even if space is available, it’s important to feel comfortable. Sometimes, it can feel awkward if certain exercises aren’t part of the gym’s culture.
We hear back from patients all the time who do less reps or skip their Plyometrics completely because they “feel silly” doing them at their gym.
Do You Need Guidance or Accountability?
Different gyms offer varying levels of guidance. Consider your comfort level and goals when selecting a gym. Some people prefer to work independently, while others seek more guidance. Base GYM offers a mix of both, with 1-on-1 consults for complex problems and coached semi-private sessions for those who want flexibility and accountability.
Community Matters
Surrounding yourself with like-minded people can provide motivation and support. Choose a gym where the community and your goals align. If you’re in an environment where people have goals far removed from yours, it’s less likely they will support you in achieving your objectives.
Is It Accessible?
Consider the gym’s accessibility based on your schedule. If you work shift hours, ensure the gym is open and accessible during your preferred workout times. For those with a fixed 9-5 schedule, attending set sessions each week can add accountability. Consistency is key to achieving your health, rehab, or performance goals.

Making health and performance sustainable and enjoyable for the long term often hinges on your environment. Choosing the right gym is crucial. The ultimate goal is to create a lifestyle habit rather than merely enduring training sessions. Find a gym that fits your needs and makes your fitness journey a rewarding experience.
